iDesign's LX Pathways Learner Experience Evaluation Report
Artifact type: Learner Experience Evaluation Report
Role: I was the sole evaluator of the pilot module for this project focusing on how the User Experience, Interface Design, and Heuristics affect the overall Learner Experience within a given module.
Artifact Description: Throughout the development of any user system whether a website, application, research system, etc., it is important to pay attention to the usability and experience it creates for the intended audience. During the process, several theories were used in the evaluation of the module and the effectiveness in delivering a positive and effective Learner Experience. Nielsen's 10 Heuristics for User Interface Design, Kolb’s Learning Styles and Experiential Learning Cycle, Shift's Four Key Elements of Learning Experience Design, and Schneiderman’s Eight Golden Rules of better Interface Design were used in the overall evaluation of the module.
Competencies: Design and Development of a Learning System and System Evaluation
Reflection: This project allowed me to fully utilize my skills in evaluating a system and it's function, the user experience, and the design and development of the course and its effectiveness in delivering a robust and practical experience. Utilizing multiple theories and frameworks/guidelines developed for the evaluation and development of courses and systems, I evaluated LX Pathways on the effectiveness of the Learner Experience. The Learner Experience focuses on not only the User Experience but also the Pedagogical layout and delivery of content. Shift's Four Key Elements of Learning Experience Design laid the framework for the evaluation. The pilot module was then evaluated on its success, weaknesses, in these four areas through the use of Shneiderman's Kolbs, and Nielsen's guidelines for effective interface and user experiences. Each area was evaluated on areas of strength and weakness and was then followed up with suggestions for improvement backed by research and well known and utilized frameworks as previously mentioned.
Strengths: I feel this report gives an overview of the initial pilot with a breadth of information in all areas of the module. In areas that were weaker, screenshots were added as reference and evidence for the areas of error and need for improvements.
Weaknesses: Due to a small amount of data received from pilot users, some of the areas of weakness were based on generalizations and assumptions made from the data. Of the pilot user cohort data was received from 3/18 users, therefore creating areas of minimal evidence and reflection and instead, the development of assumptions.
